openGauss: An Enterprise-Grade Open-Source Database System

  • We have built openGauss, an enterprise-grade open-source database system. openGauss has fulfilled its design goal of high performance, high availability, high security sand high intelligence. For high performance, it leverages NUMA-aware data access among multi-core to enable efficient concurrent trans action processing, and symmetric multi-processing to adaptively make use of parallel processing resources, and designs a novel ‘4-in-1’ fusion storage architecture to support complex multiple workloads such as OLTP, OLAP and real-time risk control. For high availability, a three-tier pooling architecture that shares storage among master and standby instances is proposed to achieve availability at 99.9%. For high security, it is a full encrypted database with features of safe storage, efficient complex querying and tamper-proof. For high intelligence, it integrates heterogeneous computing to offload the proper workload to chips such as Ascend, so as to support fast database acceleration, vector retrieval, AI model training and inference. openGauss has served over 1000 enterprises and institutions since its release in 2020. We share the lessons we learned from its development and operation, and from our customers.
