  • Synthesis of transition textures is essential for displaying visuallyacceptable appearances on a terrain. This investigation presents amodified method for synthesizing the transition texture to be tiled on aterrain. All transition pattern types are recognized for a number ofinput textures. The proposed modified patch-based sampling texturesynthesis approach, using the extra feature map of the input source andtarget textures for patch matching, can synthesize any transitiontexture on a succession pattern by initializing the output texture usinga portion of the source texture enclosed in a transition cut. Thetransition boundary is further enhanced to improve the visual effect bytracing out the integral texture elements. Either the Game of Life modelor Wang tiles method are exploited to present a good-looking profile ofsuccessions on a terrain for tiling transition textures. Experimentalresults indicate that the proposed method requires few input textures,yet synthesizes numerous tileable transition textures, which are usefulfor obtaining a vivid appearance of a terrain.
